Confessions of a Former Personal Stylist

As an Ann Taylor sales associate and personal stylist, I had the opportunity to dress newscasters, homemakers, lawyers, accountants and students. With experience, I saw patterns of style emerge. I learned how women approach dressing. I gleaned style nuggets from my fashionable customers. I listened intently to customers who seemed to abhor the whole “getting clothes” process. Here are some observations from the front lines of the fashion wars.

1. Fashionistas know it’s important to be polite to sales associates. Savvy shoppers build and develop relationships with the sales staff. You don’t have to be BFF’s, but patience and courteousy go a long way. A courteous customer says “hello” upon entering the store. She is patient when a return or special order is being processed. After trying on her pieces, she returns her merchandise to the rolling rack. She knows, appreciates, and expresses gratitude for exceptional service.

2. Fashionistas don’t default to wearing black. They know that black is much more aging than reds, whites and yellows. Color is kinder. They embrace vibrant color.

3. Every women has at least one body issue, even the sub zeros. However, truly stylish darlings seem to have the most accurate body perception and know how to cleverly conceal figure flaws and reveal body attributes. Make sure your clothes are not too tight, too short, or reveal too much skin. Accept the fact that most women simply can’t buy a pair of pants off the rack and have them fit perfectly. Find a good tailor and get a custom look with alterations.

4. The most stylish women never bought a head-to-toe look from Ann Taylor, even though we were taught to sell the customer five items, including jewelry and hosiery. Fashionistas use the in-store mannequins as a starting point. Mix the Ann Taylor top with the Nordstrom pants with the consignment store jewelry. The magic is in the mix, and so is the style. Seek pieces that are uniquely you.

5. Personal style is an imprecise science, much more an art. There are guidelines. However, the most fashionable women also have the most fun. They know that shopping can be joyous. Give yourself enough time to try a lot of clothes on. Experiment. Try something you normally wouldn’t select. I recently tried on a romper. It looked hideous, but I had fun. It might have worked but until I tried it on, who can be sure? Keep an open mind.

6. Most women wear the wrong undergarments. As Stacy and Clinton from TLC’s What Not To Wear remind us, get a professional bra fitting once a year! Explore different underwear options based on the outfit you are wearing. Ask for expert assistance. The proper undergarments make all the difference. You will look better, feel better about your look, and your clothes be what people remember, not your clumsy undergarments.

7. Stay organized! Subscribe to the store’s email list to stay in the know regarding sales and shows. I created a separate email address exclusively for store emails. That way my regular inbox doesn’t get cluttered with sales notifications. Keep your receipts in a file by retailer. Make returns in a timely fashion. Take your time in the store to make a good decision; stores track chronic returners.

8. Be prepared! If you are shopping for a special event outfit, bring the items you already have selected. Maybe it’s the shoes, or a nice blouse. Don’t imagine how it will look with the new pieces. See how it looks first-hand, in the dressing room. Bring a digital camera with you and snap a photo of yourself to give yourself visual feedback. Learn what you like and don’t like about your possible outfit, then tweak your look accordingly.

Most importantly, stylish women know that building a wardrobe takes time, patience, self-knowledge, boldness and commitment. Here’s to your style success!

Who can’t stand to lose a few pounds especially with Spring right around the corner? But if the gym is absolutely the last place you want to be right now then read below for more tips! You can instantly look thinner in just seconds without lifting a weight or doing a single crunch. Here are some of my tips on how to look your best in an instant!

Don’t wear baggy clothes because you are a.) too lazy to get something tailored or b.) want to camouflage a few pounds. It will only make you look bigger in the long run. Accent your best feature and run with it - maybe it is your small waist or enviable Michelle Obama - like arms. Why not try a wrap dress or sleeveless sheath dress that will accent both? In the office, layer a short sleeve cardigan or jacket over the look.

2. Remember how your parents told you to stand up straight? Well, I'm afraid they were right and it makes you look thinner instantly when you do!

3. Watch your fabrics - love that boucle tweed, heavy knit, or satin skirt? Depending on your body type, it can actually be not as flattering as you think. If you have more of an hourglass or pear shape, it may draw attention to your hips. Wearing an A-line skirt in a lightweight wool or cotton will draw attention to your waist while floating away from the body.

4. Want your legs to look long and lean? Try wearing a pointed heel or even a flat. It visually gives that extra length if you are petite or short in stature. You can select a classic black pump or have some fun with a bold flat, like this hot pink flat featured below.

5. Pleats - we know they are a trend this season but they can make you 10 lbs. heavier when you think you are camouflaging a belly. Stick to a flat front pant.

These are just a few tips that can help enhance the body you have now instead of the body you had way back when!

Today, in honor of the Green Bay Packers playing in Super Bowl XLV, I'm featuring Kimberly Gomez, a Wisconsin fashion blogger & the President of Impeccable Image LLC , an image consulting & fashion styling company.

"This spring, one of the trends is long skirts, which totally excites me. I've always loved long skirts and have worn them for years for a number of reasons including that they're more comfortable than short skirts because you don't have to worry about anything showing or hanging out.

You may or may not have heard the "rule" that if you're vertically challenged you shouldn't wear long skirts. Ignore it. I'm 5'4" and don't think I look stumpy or any other negative adjective, wearing a long skirt. So you won't either! Just remember to not wear a long skirt with a lot of volume, pleats or gathers that will make it look overly large or frumpy. If you're tall and thin, you have more leeway to wear long skirts with volume, but don't go overboard.

Long bottoms and long tops don't go together; so don't wear long jackets or tops with long skirts. Mid-hip should be the longest length you wear. Also, make sure the jacket or blouse is more tailored and not boxy or voluminous.

Whenever I talk about dresses or skirts, I always have to mention slips. Slips are not out of style . Unless you wear a very thick, tight fabric such as denim, corduroy or thick wool, you should always wear a slip. Just because a dress or skirt has a lining doesn't mean you can go without a slip. Most linings are see-through; so to be safe, put on a slip [see photo above]. It's easy and only takes an extra 15 seconds.

Slips come in many colors and lengths. I suggest you buy a few in both flesh tone and black at the different lengths of skirts and dresses you wear. Don't wear a really short slip with a long skirt. You'll be able to see where it ends; not a good look.

Product Review: Kosher Casual tank #1225

I waited a bit for this tank to arrive. Well, it did come from Israel. Regular international registered air mail generally takes 2-3 weeks [$6 shipping charge]. My patience, however, was rewarded.

I can't believe the Kosher Casual tank was only $11*. I've paid much more for layering pieces. First, the color: beautiful fuschia. Nicely saturated. Second, the fabric: LOVED IT. A fab combination of 92% cotton/8% lycra. Felt great on, wonderful breathability. Third, the fit: terrific. The neckline wasn't too high. Demure, without feeling suffocating. Layered perfectly under my scoop neck t-shirt. Really nice armhole openings too. Plus, the piece was long-waisted without being too long. I found the sizing to be a tad on the small size. Since I wanted a layering piece, I stayed with my medium. If you are large-chested, definitely go up a size.

I immediately test drove my tank. I felt completely confident and covered during my pilates and yoga classes. The garment stayed in place! No more Downward Dog drama. Overall grade: A-

Happy New Year!

Today, we have the lovely & talented Jacquie M. Peros [photo credit: JMP Style] with us. Jacquie is a Twitter friend of mine. Not only does she run her own image & styling company, she is also currently the President of the AICI New York Tri-State Chapter.

Often, I think online personalities reveal real personalities. Jacquie is well-mannered, engaging, helpful and stylish, of course! I wanted to learn more about her. Jacquie graciously agreed to a Q & A session with me [a few days before Christmas no less!] Enjoy!

1. Kindly brief us on your background. How long have you been a stylist? Why did you become a stylist?

I worked in marketing for most of my professional career up until three years ago. My father had passed away unexpectedly and it was then that I started to rethink my profession. If I was going to work 80 hours a week, I might as well love what I do. I have two degrees; fashion merchandising and buying and marketing so I decided to go back to school (Fashion Institute of Technology) and further my fashion expertise. I began my studies in Image consulting because it was a great marriage of my corporate marketing background and my love for fashion.

2.] What exactly is the AICI? Is it the only certifying-body for image consultants? What's required to become AICI-credentialed?

AICI stands for Association of Image Consultants International and it is a 20 year old non-profit organization that consists of a global network of image consultants and stylists that specialize in appearance, behavior and communication. There are 22 chapters worldwide and I am currently the president of the New York Tri-State Chapter which is the largest and most diverse. Anyone in the field of fashion or other related industries can join. One does not have to be certified to become a member. However, like any other industry association, there are various levels of expertise one can further achieve: FLC stands for First Level of Certification, CIP, Certified Image Professional and CIM which is Certified Image Master. The higher the level, the more qualified and skilled that image expert is.

3.] What's your favorite stylist trick?

I will not leave home without Fashion-Fix (double-sided adhesive tape)! This is great for showing clients proper placement of clothes and also great for photo shoots.

4.] What's the best part/worst part of the job?

Best part of my job is seeing opportunities open up for my clients after we work on their transformations. The worst part of my job is sometimes not being able to manage my time more effectively. I think time management is a challenge for most business owners. However, I can’t really say that this is the worst part since I truly love what I do J

5.] What are some trends for spring 2011?

6.] Where's your favorite place to shop?

Lord & Taylor. I’ve been a huge fan of this retailer for years now. They have a great selection of well made apparel and fabulous accessories at reasonable prices. Also, a great shopping experience for my petite and plus size clients.

7.] What's the biggest mistake women make when dressing themselves?

Not understanding their body shape. Many women want to shop trends and ignore whether or not these trends enhance their silhouette or take away from their silhouette. I try to emphasize how to use clothing to accentuate, balance and camouflage their body.

8.] Do you have a prized possession in your closet?

I have a mink jacket that was handed down to me from my grandmother. The detail and quality is amazing but more importantly, the sentimentality is what I love best about it ;)

9.] Describe your personal style.

My style is classic with a twist of “edginess” which I do through my accessories. I love a classic modern look with a bold piece of jewelry.

10.] How you keep up to date on the latest fashions?

I’m an avid reader of magazines and not just apparel magazines. I look at a lot of home design magazines because they are a good indicator of fashion trends. I’m also a member of FGI (Fashion Group International) and I attend their trend presentations. Lastly, living in New York City gives me a lot of insight into what trends are coming up.

11.] Who's your dream client?

I don’t necessarily have a dream client as I LOVE working with underprivileged women and giving them the tools they need to recognize their fabulousness and welcome the opportunities that will come their way. However, I have thought about how fun it would be to give Kim Kardashian a make under! J I think she is so beautiful but often her clothes, make up, etc. is over done and not necessary.

In The New Emily Post's Etiquette book, Ms. Post writes about gum chewing. "Chewing gum, in itself, if done quietly and unobtrusively, is not unattractive. But when one does it with grimaces, open mouth, smacks, crackles and pops, and worst of all with bubbles, it is in the worst of taste." I think the cardinal principle of etiquette is thoughtfulness. This implies concern for the effect of your actions on those around you. I like gum. I generally chew gum when I cook (so I won't nibble!) and when I am unable to brush my teeth after a meal to freshen up my breath. In a work situation, I think gum chewing can be a career damaging habit. What do you think? Is it difficult to talk to someone while he/she noisily chomps on his/her wad of gum? Do you play Etiquette Police and take the "offender" aside and ask him/her to please stop, or perhaps chew more quietly?

Have you ever tried to return Lands' End merchandise at a Sears? I'm grateful that I can take my items to a retail location; however, the return process is excruciating, especially for large orders. The process is tedious and time-consuming. It boggles my mind why returning Sears' merchandise is relatively "hassle-free"; yet, Lands' End returns seem to take forever. Circle item numbers on original receipt. Scan the item numbers. Print the "clearance" labels. Label the merch. Print the "returns" receipt. Wait three business days for refund dollars to hit your charge account. The sales associate is not to blame! Lands' End is a Sears brand. I'm in a fashion funk. The clothes this season are completely uninspiring and unflattering. Each time I've gone out to shop; I've come back empty-handed. The only person happy about this is my husband. I don't like short-shorts, egg-shaped organza tops, square cut jackets, sheer tops, sweater dresses, big tunics, weird high-waisted pants, big bows on anything, plunging cowl-necked jersey tops, and leggings. Why can't I find a fun blouse that doesn't require me to wear a camisole? What's a modestista to do? Embrace trends with shoe (patent peep-toe flats), bag (snakeskin clutch) and jewelry (yellow bangle) purchases and look for new creative combinations of existing wardrobe pieces. Is it fall yet?

Miss Utah Katie Millar

Congrats to Miss Utah Katie Millar for securing a top 10 place in the recently held Miss America beauty contest. Miss Millar garnered a lot of press for being the only contestant to wear a one-piece modest swimsuit in the physical fitness segment (see photo). Contestants had 76 options for two-piece swimsuits and only 6 options for the one-piece swimsuits. Miss Millar wanted to make a statement about modesty. When Miss Millar, a Mormon and Brigham Young University student, did make the top 10, she said,

I get to wear my one-piece swimsuit on national TV and hopefully a girl will see that she doesn't have to show a lot of skin to get attention or do well in society today.

Hello everyone! Have you heard about The Five Finger Prayer? You can pray by yourself or use it to help kids pray on their own:

Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C.S. Lewis once said, a "sweet duty."
The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct, and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.
The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for presidents, leaders in business and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance.
The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain.
Lastly comes our little finger; the smallest finger of all. This is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, "The least shall be the greatest among you." Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective, and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

Recently, I ventured into the J. McLaughlin store. The window displays informed me that I was about to enter Preppy Land. I'm not a preppy. Not that there's anything wrong with that style! I subscribe to the Madeleine Albright philosophy on handbags. The former U.S. Secretary of State likes to enter a room without holding anything in her hands. If she needed a purse, I'm sure her assistant was literally "holding the bag". I, too, love not being weighed down by a purse. Sometimes when I try a big "IT" bag I feel like a poseur. Not that there's anything wrong with these bags. It's just not me. I look for a contemporary appearance, and sleek, quality design in my bags like the Ra fe tote (right). I'm more of a vertical leather tote modestista. I'm attracted to the very practical file-folder size silhouette and the easy maintenance. I use an L.L. Bean travel wallet to securely keep all my cards and receipts and organize my cosmetics and supplies by using small micro mesh pouches. Now if someone could just modernize the "fanny pack" (and please rebrand/rename it!). What's your "purse"-onality? Happy 2007!

Shopportunistic!

I've just finished reading [How To Be a Retail Revolutionary] Shopportunity! by Kate Newlin. Top three ideas include:

Buy what you love.
Kick your addiction to price. Calculate value beyond price. Get out of the habit of buying mindlessly. Buy better, buy less.
Invest in relationships. Find a salesperson who "gets you" and stick with him/her.

If I buy (everything) that I love (#1), I'll violate #2. As far as idea #3, I think most sales today feel very transactional. Do you have a "relationship" with a top-notch salesperson? Not a personal shopper. I'd check this book out from the public library; however, I wouldn't buy it for myself (see idea #2). Blog over and out, Dena

Sizing Insanity!

"What size are you?" My answer is, "It depends ..." There is a lack of sizing standardization across designers/companies and even within a single size for a particular brand. Read Newsweek's Susanna Schrobsdorff article overviewing the fashion industry's challenges keeping up with changing demographics and body types. An excerpt follows:

Don't assume that the contemporary woman is wearing a bigger size than her grandmother might have. "According to standard size measurements, that average 155 pound woman should be wearing a size 16, but thanks to vanity-sizing, she's probably buying a size 10 or 12," says Jim Lovejoy, the industry director for the SizeUSA survey. "Most companies aren't using the standard ASTM [American Society for Testing and Materials] sizes any more. Sizes have been creeping up a half inch at a time so that women can fit into smaller sizes and feel good about it." Think of vanity-sizing as self-delusion on a mass scale.

Know your measurements. Get sales assistance (if possible). Try on a lot of clothes. Don't let the actual size bother you; go for FIT!!! Know which designer's sizing fits you best. Use a seamstress to make necessary alterations. When you find a pair of pants that fit perfectly, buy 2 pairs! Any strategies on dealing with size confusion? Do men have vanity-sizing? Weigh in.

Before my last trip to NYC, I did some online searches to help me organize my shopping day. I skimmed Lucky Magazine's NYC local shopping guide. It was a start. What I really wanted to see was a street map with all the stores marked on it. I hit pay dirt when I found Fashion Planet's wonderful maps (exactly as I had imagined)!!! On the home page, select the "Windows on NY" tab. You can drill down for information by street or by retailer name and also link to each retailer's website. For now, Fashion Planet only includes Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue, 57th street and the museums. For information on the Lower East side, Meat Packing district, NoLita, SoHo, and Brooklyn, check out the Style Maven website. How do you navigate in NYC?

Daily News Staff reporter Timmi Toler writes a funny piece about the virtues of "mom jeans". Here's an excerpt:

I say let mom jeans be the beginning of women taking back their privacy. I feel like we've let our daughters - and ourselves - walk around half-dressed for way too long. Style should not be dictated by industry. It should be designed by each of us to fit our lifestyles.

H & M Store Review

Yesterday I went to the newly opened H & M store at our local mall. Here's the 411.

Spacious layout, clean, modern look, and good neon-lit soffits.
Racks were stuffed with merchandise (major pet peeve).
Ridiculously low prices.
Lots of disposable trendy clothes. I found the clothes to be edgier than Old Navy and Gap and not as expensive as Urban Outfitters.
Sizing was inconsistent across items.
Poor-to-okay quality. The sweaters I tried on were quite itchy. Lots of excessively thin & flimsy shirts.
Unimpressive staff. With about 10 pieces in my hands, I ran into the only Sales Associate on the floor and asked if she could start a dressing room for me. (big pause) She looked at me like I had three eyes. "Sorry we can't do that. (pause) Oh, but we can put it on hold for you." Never mind, I'll keep the garments. Shopping can count as a light weight-bearing activity, right?
Now onto accessories. Quite disappointing. In the words of Laura Bennett from Project Runway #3, there's a lot of "serious ugly" going on in this department. Not my taste.
Nice-sized dressing room with a great wrap-around mirror.

If you accept H & M for what it is i.e., a store with a mix of basics and trendier of-the-moment clothes at bargain basement prices; then you'll be shopping responsibly. One of H & M's strengths is its ability to stock trendy items while these items are still fashionable. On my quality scale the clothes are better than Wal-Mart not quite as good as Target; although H&M has a lot more stock and I do like its European-inspired collections. No online U.S. shop yet. Bottom line: Did I buy anything? Well, actually, I did. I purchased a houndstooth-patterned cotton mock turtleneck ($12.90)and a soft, black turtleneck ($19). Post your own review. D.

Quick, Healthy Meal

Marinade boneless, skinless chicken breasts in World Harbors fajita sauce for about 1 hour in the refrigerator. Then bake chicken for 35 - 40 minutes at 375 degrees in the oven. At the 20 minute mark of baking the chicken, add the Alexia Oven Reds potatoes (no trans fats). During the last 5 minutes, steam the Del Monte fresh cut green beans. I was thrilled that everybody in the family liked everything at dinner. There were no leftovers! These products can be found at Mars, SuperFresh and Wegman's.
