The Evolution of Beauty

Dove has created a short video called, The Evolution of Beauty and has posted it on YouTube. Do you like it? What does "real beauty" mean to you? Do you realize that images in magazines are digitally altered? How does this make you feel? Do you feel this is deceptive? I appreciate the image for what it is ... AN IMAGE!!! I'm not sure this model looks better after hair and make-up; in fact, after getting her neck "elongated" she looks a bit unnatural. I think this a great video for young girls to see. Looking "perfect" is an illusion. Have a life outside of fashion. Make yourself interesting. Contribute to your community. Go on a media fast for 3 days. I dare you!

On the video...I'm afraid by the time the viewer gets to the counter culture message at the end...dove got you thinking...about the "need" to add some beauty.

Do you have media blackout days or months with your family? I know one family that shut the tube off for 30 days...remarkably the kids are still standing!

Excellent comment JM! The viral video is an advertisement. I think the new Dove tv ads targeted at younger girls are really well-done. Go to www.campaignforrealbeauty.com to see the ad on-line. The ad addresses the issue of low self-esteem in girls. It is shocking to hear how many girls think they are fat or ugly.

The media fast is really tough. Unless you go to a silent Ignatian retreat (which I highly recommend!). Try to reduce the frequency in which you consume media i.e., less tv watching, subscribing to fewer magazines etc.

Best wishes, Dena

i loved this video. it proves to others that no one has a perfect body. people go to SO much, just to make commercials, pictures, ads etc... models look fabulous.
